Idea hunting
Writing for a living can be hard work. Sometimes the words flow like the water from a leaking tap and at other times they dry right up and not even a drip of creativity can get through. For times like this when writers block kicks in, it is helpful to have a little list of things to do to get your creative ideas flowing again. Here are some ideas :
Ride the bus
Just go out, get on a long bus ride and look out of the window. Look for odd things on the road like hybrid cars, watch for strange things happening in shops doorways. See the way people interact as they get on and off the bus, where they sit. Play a game on your own and try to work out what each person does when they are not on the bus, just let your imagination flow and you will soon be brimming with ideas for future characters and situations.
Go to a museum
No matter what your subject of writing is, there will be something in a museum to inspire you. Choose a section or two of a large museum and just wander around looking at the artefacts and displays. Imagine the history of what that item has been through, who would have touched it in their life and how it found its way to the museum.
Drink coffee
Everybody knows that coffee is a writer’s best friend. If you really need to kick-start your creativity go out for coffee. Find a street cafe and watch what is going on around you.
